What is IBS?
Irritable bowel syndrome affects 1 in 5 people at some stage of their lives. The symptoms of IBS are very individual, but often include bloating, abdominal cramps and pain, excessive wind, diarrhoea and ‘urgency’ and constipation to name just a few. IBS symptoms have an emotional knock-on effect increasing stress levels, causing anxiety and embarrassment and significantly affect IBS sufferers’ work and social life.
IBS is often described as a functional gut disorder and has traditionally been treated with medication to try and manage the symptoms, but drug treatment often adds to the problems. IBS sufferers are also sometimes diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), this can be a debilitating condition and you can read a sufferer’s own moving story here. An effective dietary approach for IBS developed and recommended by dietitians and gastroenterologists is now available in the UK. The low FODMAP diet is recommended by the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE) as an effective treatment for irritable bowel syndrome if advice is delivered by a FODMAP-trained Registered Dietitian (Feb 2015).
