What does FODMAP stand for?
FODMAP is an acronym for Fermentable Oligo-saccharides, Di-saccharides, Mono-saccharides And Polyols. This is why we call them FODMAPs! These are naturally occurring in many every day foods and can trigger IBS symptoms.
Following a low FODMAP diet is shown by research to improve IBS symptoms. The diet involves restriction of likely trigger foods, followed by a process of reintroduction. It’s tricky to do alone though, so it’s best to get expert advice and support from an IBS Dietitian before cutting out major food groups.
